tips + tricks: drawing the line

Retro and sexy, the classic cat eye is the signature look of sirens like Angelina Jolie and Penélope Cruz. Precisely applied eyeliner can create the illusion of bigger eyes and is one of the hardest make-up techniques to master. But master it you can.

Resting elbows on a steady surface, gently lift the upper lid with a fingertip and, starting at the outer corner, use black liner to make five small dashes across the top lash line and then connect with short strokes. The line should start thin and get thicker as you reach the outer corner. Stay close to the lash line and finish with either a short or long flick. Line lower lids all the way round for major impact, but if you have small eyes, apply liner below lashes (not inside the rim), stopping just over halfway in.

Leave inner corners bare and highlight with a pale, shimmery shadow. Wear with groomed brows and a few layers of black mascara at the outer corners to emphasise your new wings.
