Beauty dramas? Beauty director Stephanie Darling has the answers

foundation primers

Is a foundation primer really necessary?
If you can afford an extra buy, a primer can be a worthwhile investment, because it makes foundation sit better and last longer. It’s also particularly suitable for uneven skin – say, if you have any roughness or uneven pores. That’s because the silicone-based formulation fills in a bumpy surface, creating a smooth finish. Laura Mercier’s primer is one of the originals and still one of the best. On the whole, primers tend to be expensive (upwards of $50), but Revlon’s new primer from its Beyond Natural range is cheap and cheerful at $27.95. Worth a whirl.
